FYSM Feb 27 Abortion • Framework of a debate on abortion in liberal democratic society 1) Right to life – status of the fetus 2) Right to autonomy (liberty) women’s right to choose o Conflict between the two frameworks o Resolved – can have abortion in the early stages in pregnancy Jane English: • Stand of `battlelines drive` • Looks at the extreme conservative position o 1) The fetus is a human being from the moment of conception o 2) Morally wrong to kill human beings o 3) Therefore abortion is morally wrong  She challenges that it is morally wrong to kill human beings – self defence  This position looks at biological features – legs, arms genetic code  `sufficient` to talk about the biological  Conservative analysis is too broad – yes wrong morning after pill • Destroying what is already made • Not the same as abortion –why that is not a human being • We need to build in exception or say `it is not at the moment of conception` so that the morning after pill is ok • Not conception, but some other point in the pregnancy o Extreme conservative move to less extreme `begging the question`  What is distinctive in human features – psychology and social • Extreme Liberal argument o 1) Fetus is not a human being wit
