Hesiod changed the myth to place the sky in the second generation. Mountains and the sea are local differentiations: differentiate the earth into different areas. The sky should have been earlier in creation and is made in the second generation with the mountains and the sea: it is one of the three main components of existence (earth, tartaros, sky) When it rains it is seen as the sky having intercourse with the earth and producing offspring in the form of crops.
