Document Summary
Heaven and earth were the first deities. Hesiod theogony: the birth of the gods: explanation of the gods. Although he is the first greek, he is retelling the stories: forms background of prometheus myth. Earth and sky (ouranos) give birth to the ocean (okeanos), coeus, crius, hyperion, iapetos, Theia, rhea, themis, mnemosyne, phoebe, tethys, and kronos (cronos latin spelling) Chaos is how order came into the world. Hesiod changed the myth to place the sky in the second generation. Mountains and the sea are local differentiations: differentiate the earth into different areas. The sky should have been earlier in creation and is made in the second generation with the mountains and the sea: it is one of the three main components of existence (earth, tartaros, sky) When it rains it is seen as the sky having intercourse with the earth and producing offspring in the form of crops.
