Socrates is often described as the first philosopher. 3 groups of thinkers: the milesians, team paradox, the pluralists. A city in ionia on the west coats of whats is now turkey. It was a prosperous city whose citizens enjoyed high levels of freedom and leisure time. Some citizens started to develop a whole new way of thinking about reality because of all the free time. Thales, anaximander and anaximenes tried to determine the fundamental elements and principles of the world. Very different from the mythological thinking that dominated the greek culture to that time. Thales was well-known for having successfully predicted an eclipse in the year 585 b. c. Vikings took eclipses to be caused by giant wolves in the sky that forever chased down and occasionally swallowed the sun/moon. Thales treats the world and its events as consisting of things that behave according to principles.
