Document Summary

Continental drift: basically suggesting that there was only one super ocean "panthalassa" & one supercontinent "pangaea", that eventually split up and drifted apart. Alexander du toit: added support to wegener"s theory by stating :lower portion of "pangaea" is " The way the coastlines of some of the continents fit together, notable south america and western africa. Similarity of rocks and mountains belts on continents now far apart. Similar types of glaciation in multiple locations on different continents. Places where we are starting to see evaporites (when a body of water evaporates and leaves behind its crystal deposits) forming & coral fossils in places where we wouldn"t usually find reefs. Didn"t know what was driving the movement of the continents. And how did the continents made up of lighter material, couldn"t move through the denser ocean crust. Wagener had suggested that pangea had stayed together much longer then it actually had.
