Week 8 Lecture 1 The Cultural Dimension • The dramatic changes brought about by globalization have forced policymkers to respond to  public pressures in many areas other than the economic and the political • Globalizatino good for culture? – idea that the global culture washing out others o Cultural uniqueness blurred o But also creates respect because of exposure to different culture • Homogenizing influenes of globalization viewed by new nationalists and cultural romanticists  as good – promotes integration • But then people view it as destroying existing culture What is Culture? • Linked to society – people in a society share a common culture • Cultural bond may be ethnic or racial UNESCO Universal Declaration on Culturla Diversity • Cultural diversity: the common heritage of humanity • From cultural diversity to cultural pluralism • Cultulra diversity as a factor in development • Sausage – can’t be made in certain countries D: o Same applies with music, publications, and things that become globalized • ASIAN PRIDE, wo shi zhong guo ren, ish. O si zhong got yun.  • Is it really just American culture when we talk about globalization? And its homogenous  effects? o Its’ a principle concern – term called Americanization o Americanization representing the decline of traditional, participatory cultural practices  in favour of consuming their commercial counterparts • Many cultures though, when they adopt its culture, are thinking of the American culture in the  1950s – don’t put into consideration the massive corporation, but instead the idealized image of  freedom McDonaldization • Proce
