Week 7 Lecture 2 – Future of Cities th Oct 25 , 2012 • Higher density – didn’t have any effect on the community; had a negative perception • Higher density – studies also show that it’s more dangerous The Compact City • Challenge is to envision ew form of architect design and urban planning to response the problems  of: territorial space, super­population, • Houses becoming more energy efficient; they become more affordable, hence they become cheaper and  people are buying larger and larger houses What might the future city be like? • A compact design • Characterized by the importance of the vertical spatial and space • Combining less land area; too many activities (multi­zoning) • Creating different levels connected by a path of vertical circulation Mushroom City • Flight of fancy OR Vertical design in the organic tradition? • By Mori Building, Tokyo • Assembling land divided into small parcels that meets building needs – allows for vast amount of  open space • The Vertical Garden City – Mori Building, Tokyo – modernist; can clear up more green space with  high rise The Future City as Utopian • Some Utopian utopians: watch links.. might be on exam • Idea of eco­city – the sustainable city – has been around for a long while
