The twentieth century began with an international division of labour largely shaped by the practices of colonialism, with the poorer countries exporting primary commodities to the rich while the latter specialized in the production and export of manufactured goods. As the poorer countries achieved independence, many embarked on strategies of import-substitution industrialization, building up their manufacturing capacity behind protective barriers. However, since the 1970s, a combination of factors have led to a radical transformation in the direction and pace of global flows of capital, goods, services and labour. As a result, many of the protective barriers have fallen. And the deregulation of markets, including financial markets. Growth has been most rapid in labour-intensive manufacturing:
