-Roman Empire would fall into chaos -> Strong ruler would come in, get things back together and then it would fall again because of plague, population falling and barbarians -Medieval society creates itself -cities are now less important and they move to fortified villas -There was a rule under Diocletian and Constantine who tried to restore the Empire -Army was filled with slaves, peasants and German barbarians -Cities were ruined and trade was disrupted -Elites were inefficient -Both Constantine and Diocletian ruled as absolute Monarchs as the senates were gone -They were distant and unseen by people, shielded by dissidents -Word of emperor was taken as law -So they split up the Roman Empire into 4 different sections, they ruled with a tetrarchy -Diocletian had rule over the East where it was wealthier and easier to defend -Rome was divided into two -> Western and Eastern Rome -In the late first century BC, there was a Dioclecian goal: to create more governable units and take taxes from people -Retire in 305 AD, after 19 years of war -Constantine was the new emperor with his new capital: Constantinople -West was no longer defensible -Focus more on the Eastern half -Constantine embraced Christianity and so many people were influenced by it -West: Spoke Latin -East: Spoke Greek -Byzantine Empire -1453 Fall of Roman Empire, Muslim Turks got in -500AD Roman Empire was gone -Mediterranean was brought together by Roman governance -> it was a centralizing thread CH. 7 Babylonian Captivity (597-538 BC) Antiochus IV Epiphanies (215BC) Judah Maccabee Sadducee Pharisees John the Baptist Messiah (In Hebrew: Moshiach, Greek: Christ) Apocalypse Jesus of Nazareth Gospels (Old English: Godspel,, good tidings, Greek “Evangelion”) Pontius Pilate (Govenor of Judah 26-36AD) Sanhedrin Mary and Mary Madalene Saul of Tarsus (AKA Paul) Gentilles Peter (d. 62AD) Orthodox Catholic Church Theoclosius (346-395 BC) Arianism Council of Nicaea (325 AD) Nicene creed -Christianity is heir to Rome -> United by religion in the West -Christianity and Christian leaders slipped into the cracks of leadership in Roman Empire -Universal citizenship, language and culture -Christianity spreading was not a new force -Was not conquest, religion was spread -Hebrew people -> Religion gave ethical behaviour rather than just worshipping and giving sacrifices to Gods -Syria Palestine was split into two -> Israel (to the North) and Judah (to the South) -740 BC it fell -Israelites followed the Torah and the 10 Commandments written by Moses -Physical and religious centre, the temple held sacred religious objects -This demanded ethical behaviour -God lifted protection when his laws were not obeyed -> Bad things happen -God would periodically send Judges, prophets -In 580 BC South Judah fell and the Jewish leaders were deported to Babylon in the East -> They were taken away from their homeland and because of this they had no physical state to live in -Babylonian technology was crucial for modern technology -So the Jews codified and organized their religious texts -Jews had dispersed with religion to carry around with th
