Jews ruled over by alexander the great, later by hellenistic kings. Sought to force the jews to worship greek gods in their holy temples. Critical of the priestly class of the jews and pharisees. Pharisees > haven and hell (jews not focused on the afterlife) Wandered the countryside preaching that a messiah was coming. Jewish concept > not supernatural, political leader like king david. Jesus of nazareth (4 bc - 30 ad) Born during the period of belief of messiah. Earliest accounts written 40 years after his death. Written by people devoted to him > biased, exaggerating. God"s prophet , eternal life possible through faith in him. Did not believe the torah was enough for salvation, how you live your life is most important.
