The period between 1815_1850 was marked by spike of immigration from the the british isles. Half we from ireland, quarter from scotlnd and another quarter from england/wales. Potato famine, the disease came from the americas. Potatoes were crucial food crop for 1/2 of irish population. About 400 000 irish migrated to and remained in british north america between 1830-1880. During 1847 approx 80 000 irish sailed for quebec. About died on the voyage there or early on at their arrival in canada. Arrivals: lands were given out but much work was to be done on them. When migrants are seen as bringing disease and taking jobs, the citizens of the country in which they are migrating to will often resent them. Shiner"s war 1835: conflict between irish and french canadian workers over access to the lumber trade. Started as bar fights and street brawls which eventually led to sabotage of products.
