In confederation one of the first act was an act calling of westward expansion. Many canadians were migrating to the united states because the economy was better and more jobs were available. They also took advantage of the homestead act which gave land to immigrants. So people wanted to promote migration out west to stay within canada and get better lands instead of moving to another country. Expanding the markets was also a positive outcome from expansion to west. Canada first: group of small but influential anglo canadian nationalists. Nationalism based in a sense of anglo-saxon superiority- a racial nationalism that celebrated northern. Suggested that a particular type of people were best suited to bolster canadian claims to the west. They also made strong gains out west and threatened to take canadian land and influence canadian thought. Economics : desire more agricultural land, attempt to slow emigration to us.
