hist jan 30/2014 nationalism and the making of modern nation states ­ emergence of a new community; nation state ­ social construct of living in a community was created by people in history ­ ppl felt sense of belonging when in a small communities like clans and villages ­ at most ppl felt part of a religion..region w/e france and england ­ culturally diverse ­ ppl felt stronger ties to a clan than the kingdom itself ­ ppl were into their empires and kingdoms but they never felt part of their country dante alighieri ­ wrote the "divine comedy" ­ from florence, loved florence, got expelled from florence ­ spends rest of his life mourning b/c of it..moves to rome ­ relates to community because its a sense of belonging questions we wanna answer 1. why do ppl feel the need to build nation states? 2. what are some of the consequences of the emergence of this type of community? Otto von bismarck ­ wanted to promote economic development over a wider territory ­ modernizers wanted to build efficient economies ­ people on the lower end of the social economy wanted better lives, liberation, they also believed  having a larger state economy would bring them better lives ­ evident in italy and russia russia ­ 19th century they were aristocratic ­ serfdom ­ into slavery ­ elites pushed to modernize their country after the defeat of the crimea war ­ ottoman and russia war ­ they expected to win but they lost the war ­ 1 million russians died ­ 2/3 of men died from disease and starvation  ­ they thought serfdom was holding them back from begin a modern country ­ serfdom made them a "weak" military ­ thought self based economy was inefficient alexander nikitenko ­ helped make a stronger country ­ a serf wanted to modernize russia emperor dom pedro II of brazil ­ wanted to centralize the gov… modernize it ­ buil
