Settlers more along the coasts of africa due to trade and exploration. Not settled inland for a long time due to malaria, yellow fever, rainforest, and african tribes. Centuries before europeans were able to travel across the continent. Europeans developed a medicine (quinine) to survive malaria in mid 19th c. The belief that the west is superior and more civilized than the non-western world. Africans have not only shaped their own history, they have played a central role in important chapters in world history. Human species originated in africa 20,000 years ago. Western historians had a racist attitude toward african history > hugh trevor-roper said africa had literally no history prior to the arrival of europeans (1963) Europeans purchased and forcibly shipped 11 million africans to the new world as slaves. Used to build the new world through plantations, mines, infrastructure, household help. Africans had to be dehumanized and treated as property to justify horrific treatment.
