Were eventually defeated by the persian empire. Sweet and salt waters (gods apsu and tiamat) meet at tigris and euphrates. Apsu kills the children because he finds them annoying. Anthropomorphic gods- gods in the form of humans. The annunaki create the igigi as slaves because they are lazy and selfish. The igigi rebel against the anunnaki and their leader enlil. Enlil and the council creates slaves that won"t rebel. Babylon myths often had a local focus. Shows the centrality of babylon (could add to a sense of patriotism). Propaganda to the people that live there. Combat myth was the longest living story genre. Gave authors a way to reflect on ancient kingship. Marduk defeats tiamat and gains ultimate kingship forever.
