Document Summary

Biological species concept: species are groups of actually or potentially inter-breeding natural populations which are reproductively isolated from other such groups. Large groups (population) -> splits into smaller groups (populations) that are reproductively isolated. Pre-zygotic (zygote - test. egg) + intrinsic isolation. Ecological isolation: in same place, but not in contact. Temporal isolation: in contact, but breed at diff times. Behavioural isolation: breed at same time, not interested. Gametic isolation: physically compatible (embryo wont form) Post-zygotic: fertilization occurs but offspring (not viable, not fertile) Now in 6th mass extinction: 20-90% of families go extinct. Taxonomy: d domain, k kingdom, p phylum, c class, o order, f family, g genus, s species. Habitats vary -> each species thrives in some habitats & not in others. Motile organism -> move around (freely) (select habitats) Reflects an organism"s use of resources & its functional role in a community .
