Rare contemporary journalism proficient in radio, tv and documentary. Anishinaabe (bear clan member) from wasauksing first nation (perry. Storytelling is important part of culture- passing it down. Not much of a cultural presence in community. Kids bused in to town into day schools like residential schools- tried to assimilate them, can"t do dances and songs, cut hair, can"t practice culture, etc. Indian act in canada forbade a lot of culture practices in 1900"s. Written in law that people couldn"t dance, pow wow, congregate, etc. Cultural renaissance in 80"s- people standing up for land and being proud again. First time he saw resistance and tv cameras- people protesting land being dug up, peacefully ended- trucks left and never came back. Bond re connected between people and the land after that. Started having ceremonies again, people became interested in who they are as people. Became really proud of identity after that. People take pride in the strong storytelling culture now.
