Deals with administration of justice and several liberties, guilt and innocence, etc- important because it could mean jail/prison/punishment. To prevent judicial proceedings from being prejudiced or tainted by information not heard in open court (in public). Open court= when judge and jury are present, people are testifying in public. Found in: common law and statute law. Only one person can ask you to leave during a trial, and that is the judge- can ask spectators to leave if witness is too nervous, for example. Judge is only one who has authority and power to ask people to leave court- no one else. Ignorantia juris neminem excusat- ignorance of the law is no excuse. S11 charter of rights and freedoms- innocent until proven guilty in a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal.
