Newspaper Wars in Canada
Developments in newspapers in Canada are due to the Canadian economy. The US transformed from a
society based on agriculture and trade to a society whose wealth is primarily founded on the
manufacture of goods. This caused the cities to transform from small towns to large urban areas.
These large cities needed a new way to provide information.
In Canada, all of this happened, it just happened a lot later than the US. After Confederation Canada
had newspapers, they were just really small.
Historical Ottawa used to be a rough city. Their first newspaper was a 4 page weekly, eventually
became a daily in 1865. Eventually became the Ottawa Citizen.
All the Journalism in Canada at this time was political, meant for upper classes. The reason for this was
that Canada developed after the US.
Canada and the US are very similar, but they are also very different. Canada industrialized much slower
than the US- some argue that Canada never really industrialized.
What are the great, iconic American corporations?
- General Motors- Ford
- Apple
- Microsoft
They all make things. Design, assemble and sell products.
What are the equilivantl in Canada?
- Banks
- Oil
- Railway
Ours don’t actually make anything, except profits. They finance things, move things, pull things out
of the ground, facilitate communication. None of these things actually make products, or invent
things.
Canada traded with people for manufactured goods- mainly England, and then US.
It is not in the economic interest for the country to industrialize. It is not in the interest of the US or
Britain for Canada to industrialize.
Canada basically has a third world economy, but it is a third world economy that works. Because of
this, Canada avoided having ghetto’s, cities like Detroit. Our largest city, Toronto, is a very nice city.
Rochester, NY is 400 km from Ottawa, and is a much smaller city. Last year, Rochester had 50
murders. If Ottawa had the same homicide rate as Rochester, there would be 220 murders. Ottawa
actually had 7 murders last year. The reason for this difference is because Canada never
industrialized, and never invited in the problems that come with industrialization.
