-Are we better or worse off because of the internet? The answer is yes, both.
We have a lot more ability to tell stories.
Before, he had 6 ways to tell a story, now he has 80 elements to tell a story with.
The challenge today is to decide which of the 80 fits your story best
-It is easier to reach sources today
-On the other hand… The resources that news organizations have has shrunk
-You have less time to work on your story, you have to work on multiple stories a
day
-The news has more power- Donald Trump is talking to 5000 news outlets today,
not just 15 like before
-Economics will likely get sorted out
Some organizations will fail
Advertising is not the answer- pop up ads, but store coupons- publications could
be a mediator for store coupons
-The way we communicate messages will get better again
-The principles haven’t shifted- how you live up to the principles has changed
Example: before, when journalists’ were covering an event they were being a
gatekeeper over what the public knew. Today, the event is probably going to be
broadcasted live. You have to check the facts, and sometimes fight the thing that
was put out- harder.
-Politics today- the coverage is very aggressive. The media contributes because the
media rewards people who stand out. This encourages being provocative, but it
does not reward it. The candidates then tap into the anger- the anger is not
caused by the media system but the media situation enables it.
-What can you do to penetrate, for example, Donald Trump? You can’t just say in
every article that he is a liar, people know this and they don’t care
-What books have you read recently? Thinking Fast and Slow, Disruption, Simply
Better, Keeping it Simple, The Lean Start-up
-It is more valuable to read books on the economy than books on journalism
-What does your regular day look like? Getting up and writing, meetings, emails,
