Bleuler 1911 (coined the term autism ) Kanner 1943: clinical description (social isolation, resistance to change, communication dysfunction, recognized biological base to disorder, noticed parents particularly successful educationally or academically, didn"t feel children were intellectually challenged. Asperger 1944: viennese doctor described group of children very similar to kanner"s description. Dsm i to 5 (diagnostic and statistical manual of mental disorders) Rett: group of girls: short period of normal development & then profound motor & intellectual regression. Can find some info in genetics: rett syndrome. Little girls would get, with showing behaviours of autism. Have a blood test for it now, so not on dsm anymore: childhood disintegrative disorder. Children would develop normally till about 18 mo, then regress. More severe: pervasive developmental disorder not otherwise specified. Little bit more social: asperger syndrome. Considered to have typically developing intellectual ability. Often knowledgeable on topics of their own interests.
