Can come into court once a week and plead guilty to whatever offence. Intended to prevent crime by addressing the circumstances underlying a person"s offending behaviour. Most often the underlying problem is drugs or mental health issues. Want to rehabilitate and reintegrate into society. Parents are always notified of criminal charge and can be subpoenaed to appear. Are not supposed to detain a youth. Can"t be detained in custody if not upon conviction they cannot be found guilty. Criteria for custody: crime of violence. Give advice on appropriate either extrajudicial measures, conditions for interim release, sentences, including the review of sentence and reintegration plans. People who may be involved: youth, parents, childrens aid worker, probation officer, school board members, school psychologist. Gladu principle over incarceration of native people: alcohol related. Acknowledging and having sentencing principles that apply specifically to native offenders.
