Social control: refers to methods used by members of a society to maintain order and to promote predictability of behaviors. Informal social control: internalization of group norms: e. g. dress code, incest (18 yrs old) characteristic of small community, face-to-face, no official group mechanism, or person in charge. Formal social control: external pressures: the use of universal sanctions, systems of standardization, evaluations, professionalization, securing conformity via reinforcement and punishment in a systematic and visible way (e. g. the military) Criminal sanctions: laws enacted by legislators and modified by the court decisions; define criminal behaviors and specify the sanction imposed for violations (textbook p. 139) In 2000, 1 out of 10 living in canada had a criminal record (17% of men and 4% of women)
