Foundational concepts: presumption of innocence, burden of proof, beyond a reasonable doubt: Crime: any act or omission of an act that is prohibited and punishable by federal statute. Body of law that prohibits acts and punished acts that harm people, property, the community, etc. Criminal law deals with the entire community, it"s not a crime unless the whole community deems it a crime. When societal (or government) values change in canada, criminal law changes. Lists crimes and sentencing ranges available (changes made go through the legislative process and must be constitutional the criminal code cannot counteract the constitution) Prostitution: legal in some european countries, nz and legality has recently changed in cnd. ^living off the avails of prostitution, communicating/advertising in public, and operating a bawdy house were illegal. *there is a difference between criminalizing something and something being illegal. No longer have capital punishment in cnd (removed in 1976)
