Making sure the land will remain the same (resources are not over exploited) for future generations; thinking 7 generations ahead. Had to break canadian law in order to comply with their own laws. No need for fishing licence because of the treaty. Catholicism, residential schools in order to attempt to disconnect them to their land and ways of life. The earth is our mother and must be treated with respect. Government wants to regulate access to resources, but aboriginals want to regulate it in their own way to insure that it is not over exploited, and ensure sustainability of their resources. Basis of authority: bring back traditional practices. Oils, gas, (pipelines), it itself an articulation of use of resources. Positive economic impacts for country and for workers of those corporations. Donald marshall case: undermining the treaty which is their own law. Treaty rights: recognized by the supreme court but there is still a struggle and tension.
