A breezy intro to core topics in linguistics (light version of ling 1001) An in-depth look at language-related topics of public interest from a linguistics point of view (not covered in ling 1001) Topics about language that make it to the news. Issues about language that are socially important. For both being informed (i. e knowing a little linguistics) gives you an advantage. A common question people ask about language: what is correct and what is. Linguistics are interested in discovering what speakers know when they know their native language. Key observation: native speakers know things about their language that they don"t know they know.
