LING 2604 Lecture Notes - Lecture 2: Cricoid Cartilage, Thyroid Cartilage, Eardrum
Document Summary
Lesson 2 - anatomy and physiology of verbal communication. Structure of the larynx (muscles, nerves, cartilage, mucosa) Cartilages (3 + 1) three main types + another (epiglottis: thyroid (shield) contains area that sticks out that is your adams apple. Cricoid (ring)- thyroid cartilage sits on this ring: arytenoids (pyramid shaped) Epiglottis (leaf) above the glottis, if people have hard times closing the vocal chords, they are told to eat with their heads down which causes the epiglottis to cover the glottis a bit more: muscles. Intrinsic muscles that bring the vocal chords together and work in sound production. Extrinsic help whole larynx move up and down: nerve supply = vagus (10th cranial nerve) Bernoulli effect (van den berg 1958): the air coming out of the lungs has reduced air pressure, which causes a vacuum effect which helps pull the vocal chords together (along with muscles that pull them together)
