Paradigms are real, could possible be in your head. Syncretism (morpheme based) same marking more than once, ie latin. Accidental homophony (accident of history they sound the same) v syncretism. Declension is a feature that morpheme model is sensitive to. Word-based network of rules is just a paradigm. Comes naturally out of a rule based theory. Rule of referral, in order to make one form do what you did with this identical rule. Paradigms with new paradigms you only change the little but that needs to be changed. Instead of bus being dative pl. , it could be just pl. and falls in specific/ less specific places. Elsewhere condition, when it is the least specific environment/requirements, what is left after everything else is gone. Under specification a word can express more meaning than it actually means. Syncretic paradigmatic reduction of specificity in a morpheme based model. Affixes don"t have to mean exactly where they appear, they can mean a similar subset.
