Adds weight and power to the bass line. A common folk instrument throughout the world. Glissando: a rapid run up and down the strings: special effects. Vibrato: a controlled wobble in the pitch produced by shaking the hand that holds down the string. Pizzicato: plucking rather than bowing, the string. Results in a sharp attack that dies away quickly. Tremolo: made by rapidly repeating the same pitch with quick movements of the bow. Trill: a rapid alteration between two neighboring pitches. Mute: a device played on the strings that dampen the tone.
