What do i mean by drugs": psychoactive drug : alters cell ring in the brain (neurons) Includes anti-depressants, drugs of abuse, even pain meds! Why do we use drugs: intoxication (primary cause) Set of physiological, cognitive and behavioural changes that occur as a direct result of the effects of a substance on the central nervous system (cns) Alters perception, mood, personality, decision-making, motor control: short term effects (ie. rst use) different from chronic usage. Drug tolerance: increased amount of drugs needed to achieve intoxication, or a diminished drug effect with continued drug use of the same amount of a drug. Can become tolerant to some aspects of a drug, but not to others eg) alcohol inhibits you to pee a lot and increased time spent in rem. Can have very high blood levels of drug & not appear intoxicated eg) alcohol- tolerance.
