Pain is an emotional and sensory experience. Look at units to know if its a current or voltage clamp. (a = current) All nociceptors synapse on the dorsal horn. Laminae 1 and 2 mainly receive nociceptive stimuli. * slides on processing are very important to know (slide 11 to about 15) Multimodal - response to pain and mechanoreceptor inputs. Neurons cross the midline and then up to the brainstem (for pain and temp) For touch the neurons don"t cross the midline. Sensory-discrimination aspects of pain (ex. where the pain is coming from) * be able to give a few examples of the targets in affective-motivational pathway. A lot of regions involved in pain. Touch can gate pain eg. when you hit your dumb. Inputs go through the pag all the way to the spinal cord to in uence pain signals. Allodynia eg. a touch of a feather feels very painful, as if it"s a blow torch.
