PHIL 1200 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Japanese Festivals, Yukata, Edo Period
Document Summary
An economic power, a nation of cutting-edge technology, a nation that leads the world in new trends, these are the typical modifiers that precede the word japan. However, this describes only the modern image of japan. Japan, nor the efforts of the japanese people to uphold their traditions. Let"s take a look at the japan of today, through its traditional festival known as matsuri. It"s the day of hanabi, the fireworks at futako tamakawaen. People are gathering in order to watch the firecrackers in the night sky. The place is so packed, one can hardly find an empty space. Hanabi, the typical japanese festival, usually takes place on the riverside, on the beach, or even on the village lot during summer. Everywhere in japan, one can often see people gather and enjoy the festival. Perhaps this is why japan is often known as the land of festivals.
