Noam Chomsky  Casandra Dana Noam Chomsky ­naturalist  no specific commitments in regards to metaphysics does not speculate what the world is made of there is one nature ­rules guide behavior ­people have tried to identify him as a dualist because he attempts to separate mental entities from the  body, such as rules being separate from the brain ­Chomsky makes no commitment to the materiality of the rules, and mental phenomena are fair game for  science ­he claims his opponents are dualists ­his opponents are typically behaviorists, and they are dualists because they take a part of nature, cordon it  off from scientific investigation, and say “we shall not study this”  ­problem with Chomsky’s idea of rules:  no mind body problem, but a competence­performance problem competence= innate knowledge (brain mechanisms etc.) of language/rules, performance is the act of
