PHIL 2003 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Scholarly Approaches Of Mysticism
Document Summary
Premises should be a good reason to accept the conclusion. Testimony: includes info from the media, experts, etc. Ex. there are seven days in a week. To evaluate a belief we take others for granted. Principle of belief formation: we can assume that out background belief about the world is approximately true when deciding to accept a claim. If a claim con ict with our bi we can reject it unless there is evidence to justify it. Ex. claim that unions don"t exist can be accepted on the basis of bi. Keep you beliefs until there is reason to change. Don"t conclude that every belief that we don"t know the source to check should be given up. Things we know independently of observation or experience. Ex. mathematical truths, de nitions, truths of logic (no proposition is both true and false) We can accept a proposition that has a priori justi cation.
