Mimesis: the same, representation of real life through art. Idem: identity as sameness, numerical and qualitative identity. Ispeity: identity as self, the subjective self (i am having an identity crises) Not trying to throw away identity (unlike par t) Identity is a practical theory (not looking at criterion, essence or cartesian soul. We are looking at what has been done and what should be the case) Suggests that the method we use is de cient. Starts by asking how we usually make sense of history, how we tell it to ourselves (like how the history textbooks have a narrative) and compares that with chronological texts. Concludes that both have a narrative structure: he believe that you can reconcile the individual to their history through narrative. Culture seems to have plots which we pluck out and emplot (emplotment) Analytic: north american (anglo-centric), concerned with analysis of language, thought, mind and the signi cance of the di erent parts.
