Class 9 psci2300b march 10, 2014 marx 1. Marx was a student of hegel, who heavily influenced marxism. Marx has to flee germany because of repression and went to england, and witnessed height of industrial revolution. Marx is interested in history and development of human being as universal subject; but he"s moving from philosophy (realization of man"s spiritual nature) into a more practical political project where he is unapologetically atheist. Written in 1844; french revolution had failed; conservative reaction throughout europe; rights of man had been frustrated: marx blamed frustration of the enlightenment project was because of the emphasis on intellectual development and not social change. Marx historical materialism: critique of philosophy, man is a material/natural being. Religion is the opiate of the masses; previous philosophies that abstract human freedom are projects of wish fulfilment. Point of human freedom not to realize it in afterlife but here and now.
