PSCI 2701 Lecture Notes - Nonprobability Sampling, Snowball Sampling, Literature Review
Document Summary
Psci2701b class 10 nov 19 2013. A specific reason why we select certain cases no random selection. Convenient/volunteer/accidental sampling: need people to participate in your survey; wont claim great things about the whole population, don"t necessarily claim to have a perfect sample, pick the samples that are more convenient/willing to participate. Purposive sampling: having specific purposes for your cases, e. g. , having a limited sample only few are relevant so you have to talk to them. Snowball sampling: don"t have a list to build off of can"t find a perfect list, e. g. , members of terrorist groups/mafia members/marijuana users. Identify a few (retired members, arrested people), and start with them. Ask them questions if they can hook you up with other members. Snowball from here: researchers will try to find different networks starting from 4 or 5 people who don"t know eachother. Quota: sample with different members from different organizations that you tried to research.
