Document Summary

Class 2 psci2702a january 15, 2014. Spss is the program we will use in this course. Three measures of variables: nominal, ordinal, and interval. Cannot rank order nominal variables, or use math on it. Can rank order ordinal variables used to measure things like education, happiness, etc. You can rank order interval variables, as well as calculate the difference between two scores. In a normal distribution, mean, median, and mode are all the same. Line in the middle is the median. Low numbers deflate the mean and it is why the average score is lower than median and mode. Can look at the mean and median to determine whether or not there is a positive or negative skew. Calculate the average like above, then subtract the average from every score, square it, add it up, and divide by the number of numbers to get the standard deviation. X i x is the deviation from the mean.
