Lecture #5 second image (state/domestic): second image theories, the internal organization of states is the key to understanding war and peace. Ethnic groups calling for their own state. Example: eastern europe had a movement for all slavic-speaking people to come together. This threatened both the ottoman and austro-hungarian empires as they had large slavic populations: capitalism and imperialism. Imperialist war that broke out as a result of sharp imperialist contradictions. Regime change, elections, nationalism, geography, etc: economic interests that can be masked. Haliburton: resources available can play a large role too. Access to oil, water, etc: political system type: Some regimes more prone to war than others. Democratic peace theory: democratic peace theory, democracies do not go to war with each other. Democratic dyads are peaceful, democracies in themselves are not.
