It encompasses labour unions and international organizations like ngos. In the roman context, civitas is related to the life in common. Civil wars are internal wars within the society: global civil society (gcs, again, civil society has deeper roots in history whereas global civil society only appeared after the 1980s and 1990s. It is not just transnational because transnational only means that it crosses the boundaries of states but in reality, it is more than that and rather a global phenomenon, partly because of globalization: ex. Waves of solidarity (through the internet, when there is solidarity in one part of the world, it quickly spreads throughout: ex. Shooting at charlie abdo: everyone quickly began to show their support for france and its people. It is the product of globalization and a force against globalization. A lot of people see global civil society as something that works in more than just one way rather than governments and economic factors.
