PSYC 1001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 8: Functional Neuroimaging, Cognitive Style, Decision-Making
Document Summary
Goals for today"s class : chapter 8: language and thought. Cognitive psychology: cognitive psychology (study of thinking) try to underline the behavior, how the mental process shapes behavior. Researchers in this field seek to explain behaviour by investigating mental processes and structures that cannot be observed directly (attention, learning, problem solving, memory, language, etc. ) The term cognition refers to all processes by which the sensory input is transformed, reduced, elaborated, stored, recovered, and used. It is concerned with these processes even when they operate in the absence of relevant stimulation, as in images and hallucinations. Also involves theoretical work involving computer simulation of the brain/mind. For some types of task, mind is do this quickly, but for another type of task, computer is faster. Mind: descartes distinguished between mind & matter, brain: the physical organ composed of neurons (100 billion neurons with 100 trillion connections, mind: (from webster"s dictionary)
