Left hemisphere: responsible for language, math (analytical and sequential skills) Right hemisphere: visual, spatial, more holistic, music, language meaning, creativity, intuition, recognizing emotion in others. Speech production (if damaged, know what to say but can"t say it) Comprehension of speech (if damaged, can speak but what they say is meaningless) Generally, hemisphere specialization: left wired to right side of brain (vise versa), eyes wired to both (but something) Brain plasticity can reorganize and compensate for damage. Tumor, epilepsy, surgery (regain what they should have lost) Brian cole rats and mice raised in stimulating environment, dendrites are longer (brains change b/c of environment) Conception > adulthood growth spurts in brain (like physical, 17-20, frontal lobe development, ability to plan and control emotions. Born with unlimited possibilities (then learn specific language, rules of society, so prunes back to focus on these) Myelination: (growing of like insulation) continues through adolescence. Lesions= localized brain injuries or destruction of brain tissue.
