PSYC 1002 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Microsoft Powerpoint, David Wechsler, Test Anxiety
Document Summary
Let"s start by thinking about how we define intelligence . Today we believe that there is a broad span of strengths that are variations of intelligence. Humans have been attempting to measure intelligence for a long time (see slide #2 in chapter 9 notes power point for principle types of psychological tests). Key concepts of intelligence tests: standardization: every person must write the same test. Correlation is a measurement of relation between two variables, for example: height vs. shoe size. Generally, a taller person will have larger feet, therefore height and shoe size have a high positive correlation. We call it high negative correlation when two variables are related, but instead of increasing or decreasing together they steadily move apart. For a certain type of intelligence yes, but for our modern and broad definition of intelligence no. Criterion-related validity: this is when a subject"s test scores are substantially correlated with a criterion measure of their aptitude.
