Chapter 3 Readings
Nervous systems is a complex communication network in which signals are constantly being transmitted,
received and integrated
Nervous System
o Living tissue composed of cells glia and neurons
Neurons are individuals cells that received, integrate and transmit information,
communication links of the nervous systems
Dendrites are the parts of the neurons that are specialized to received info
Complex electrochemical reactions fluids containing electrically charged
atoms and molecules called ions
In order for neurons to communicate, signals have to cross a gap to permit
communication neurotransmitters are chemicals that transmit information
from one neuron to the next
Glia are cells found throughout the nervous system that provide various types of
support for neurons
Also play a role in information processing
Relines on chemical couriers to communicate information
Neurotransmitters are fundamentals to behavior, playing a key role in everything from
muscle movements to mental health
Serotonin and norepinephrine are linked to depression
Endorphins are chemicals that are involved in pain relief
Abnormal levels of dopamine are linked to schizophrenia

The peripheral nervous systems are made up of all the nerves that lie outside the brain and
spinal cord consists of the remaining’s nerves that fan out throughout the body
The central nervous systems consist of the brain and spinal cord
The somatic nervous system is made of nerves that connect to voluntary skeletal muscles and to
sensory receptors- carry signals to skin, muscles and joints
Afferent nerve fibers carry info to inward CNS
Efferent nerve fibers carry info to outward CNS
o The autonomic nervous systems are made of nerves that connect to the heart, blood vassals and
smooth muscles, glands
o
o Walter Cannon ‘Flight or Flight’ response monitored this response in cats after confronting
dogs. He concluded that organisms generally respond to threat by preparing physiologically for
attacking or fleeing,
