PSYC 2001 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: American Psychological Association, Theoretical Definition, Operational Definition
Document Summary
Defines the operations or techniques the researcher will use (or used) to measure or manipulate each variable. It turns a conceptual definition into exactly how it was measured or manipulated. Need sufficient information so that a different researcher could replicate the study and measure/manipulate the variable in the exact same way. Can be multiple different ways to measure/manipulate a variable. The more abstract/conceptual the variable, the greater the need to operationalize the variable. Exercise: type of exercise, frequency, intensity, duration, environment, etc. Pain: self-report, what about the response scale, how many response options (5, 7, 10, 100) Textbook is based on the ethical principles in the united states. We will be focusing on canadian standards. Lots of similarities but also some distinct differences. Focus on the principles of ethics (these have been stable for a longer period of time) Here at carleton it keeps changing.
