Description
The Uncanny Valley MacDorman et al. (2009) MacDorman and Ishiguro (2006) Theories of Eeriness - Evolutionary heuristics for avoiding danger and disease, or selecting good mates. - Cognitive processes involved in terror management. - Most frequently, the emotional response has been characterized as eeriness, an emotion with a negative valence.Anumber of theories have been proposed… Does the Uncanny Valley Exist? - Confirmation: Human likeness and emotional response related as a cubic (or even a quadratic) function. - Disconfirmation: Human likeness and emotional response related as a linear function. Testing Theories of Eeriness - Disgust- disease avoidance - Attractiveness- mate selection - Fear- threat avoidance OR Terror management Methods: pre-test - 16 digital human faces - 80 participants - Participants ranked male and female faces by attractiveness - Faces compared by measures of central tendency - 4 faces selected for main experiment Methods: stimulus creation - Prototypicality • 7 continuous levels of anatomical changes + Eye size + Mouth size − Eye separation − Face height - Realism • 7 continuous levels of polygon reduction - Had a total of 49 faces - Trying to vary human likeness without morphing it with something else 7-point Likert Scales - Human-like - Eerie - Scary (fear) - Disgusting - Attractive Experimental Design - Incomplete Block Design • Blocked by stimulus model • Each Ss viewed 1 male & 1 female • Counter-BalancedAcross Ss - Randomized (within block): • Stimulus and Scale Order - All faces seen same number of time across participants • Each participant saw each face once - No one received the same order of faces because it was randomly done - Scales were also randomized (attractive, disgusting, eerie, etc) for every face Participants - 163 (-1) participants • 1 removed for not following directions - 84 females, 78 males - M age= 20.41, range = 17-43 years.
