Rejection occurs when one is prevented by others from forming or keeping a social bond with them (the opposite of acceptance) Ostracism refers to the experience of being rejected, ignored or excluded. Chronic rejection tends to be associated with pain, illness, depression, suicide ideation, et(cid:272). o(cid:374)e"s self-esteem also suffers and people feel worthless. Rejection sensitivity when someone expects rejection and becomes hypersensitive to the possibility of rejection. In addition to psychological pain from rejection, people report feeling physical pain as well. Dewall et al. (2010) examined whether pain suppressants (e. g. , acetaminophen) reduces pain associated with rejection. Participants assigned to either take tylenol or placebo pills everyday for 3 weeks (one morning and one night) At night reported how much social pain they felt each day. Results: found that people who took tylenol reported a decrease in social pain. Social pain can be exhibited as physical pain.
