PSYC 2301 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Anatomical Pathology, Sedentary Lifestyle, Pineal Gland
Document Summary
Health = physical, mental and social well being and not merely the absence of illness. Just because we"re not sick doesn"t mean we"re healthy: health is a mental state and has a social aspect (social interactions) Evolving view of diseases: anatomical pathology: change in organs linked to symptoms, tissue pathology: specific tissues become diseased, cellular pathology: there are unhealthy cells, germ theory: many diseases caused by microorganisms, realized they had to start sterilizing. Illness caused by physiological disturbance - health meant you weren"t sick. Illness today vs past: 21st century: live longer, die of chronic illness, accidental injury, look at lifestyle and personality when it comes to getting sick, past: infectious disease. Personality and illness: cognitive, affective and behavioral tendencies that are stable across time, people low in conscientiousness=more likely to die of cardiovascular disease, high postive emotions=live longer, high anxiety= risk dying young.
