Traditionally, was thought of in terms of length of survival & disease symptoms/signs. At current, given attention in management of chronic illness. In 1982, jachuk et el found: 100% of physicians thought that their hypertension patients had improved quality of life w/ medication: only half of patients agreed, most relatives of patients disagreed. Recall that those w/ chronic illnesses more likely to suffer from depression, anxiety, & stress, which increase risks of mortality from chronic conditions (symptoms & course of illness worsened) Consideration of psychological factors = important; also quality of life consideration.
