He found that the 6 layers of mammal brains were organized into columns across the brain, and all the neurons in each layer mapped to the same region on the skin. A cortical column has the same receptive field on the skin as another layer of the same column. Hu(cid:271)el a(cid:374)d wiesel (cid:894)(cid:1005)9(cid:1010)(cid:1004)(cid:859)s(cid:895) dis(cid:272)o(cid:448)ered the (cid:272)olu(cid:373)(cid:374)ar orga(cid:374)izatio(cid:374) of the primary visual cortex. They worked out of harvard and both won the nobel prize in 1984 for their work expanding on. About 100 neurons found along a line perpendicular to the cortical surface.
