Document Summary

Originally, it was thought there was only 1 homunculus in the brain, but now we know there are 4 separate homunculi: areas 3a (muscles), 3b (skin, slow), 1 (skin, fast) and 2 (pressure and joints). Ver(cid:374)o(cid:374) mou(cid:374)t(cid:272)astle dis(cid:272)o(cid:448)ered i(cid:374) the (cid:1005)9(cid:1009)(cid:1004)(cid:859)s the (cid:272)olu(cid:373)(cid:374)ar orga(cid:374)izatio(cid:374) of the pri(cid:373)ary somatosensory cortex. He found that the 6 layers of mammal brains were organized into columns across the brain, and all the neurons in each layer mapped to the same region on the skin. A cortical column has the same receptive field on the skin as another layer of the same column. They worked out of harvard and both won the nobel prize in 1984 for their work expanding on. About 100 neurons found along a line perpendicular to the cortical surface.
