PSYC 2400 Lecture Notes - Lecture 10: Risk Assessment, Risk Perception, Fundamental Justice
Document Summary
Risk is viewed as a range, varies in degree to which individuals consider dangerous. 3 steps to risk assessment: risk perception: the probability that an individual will commit an act. The focus is on identifying the risk factors: risk assessment, risk management: the development of interventions to manage/reduce the likelihood of future violence. The focus is identifying what treatment might reduce the level of risk or what needs to be implemented to manage the risk level. Risk assessment can occur in both civil and criminal context: civil: private rights and legal proceedings to do with these rights. Ex: immigration laws require that individuals only to be admitted to. Canada if there are grounds to believe that they will not engage in violent act: criminal: situations where they are being charged with a particular crimes. Ex: an individual may be denied bail if there is substantial likelihood that they will commit another crime.
